Karlsruhe American HS is having an "all-years" reunion July 5-8, 2012 in Falls Church VA (near DC.) If anyone had kids that attended KAHS (not just graduated) please have them email me or check out the KAHS website: dad worked as a civilian at Smiley & I lived in Karlsruhe (Paul Revere Village and on the economy in Neureut) from 1961-1975.
So Chris, if I may, here's a special shout-out to the Classes of '71 and '72, and best wishes on your reunion.
I probably ate there more often than I would have because of her.

After forty years faces have faded from memory and only fragments of conversations remain, but I do remember one student by name - Kathy Berghauser, who worked in the messhall at Smiley in the Spring of '71.
The high school kids were about my age and I got to know a few at the rink and also in the Main Area. In the Fall of '71 my friend Steve Carlson and I spent some of our weekend afternoons rollerskating in the gym at Smiley along with a lot of high school kids, and I remember the football game at Smiley during Homecoming that Fall and also the bonfire at night in Paul Revere Village.
I liked going downtown but sometimes I just felt like hanging around with other Americans. Downtown Karlsruhe certainly had its attractions but it was also great having the option of just hanging around the Main Area and being around other Americans besides GIs.
I used to go there on Sundays in the fall of '71 when the weather started turning cold and I just didn't feel like going far from the barracks. I made three small videos from current situation in Gerszewski, Smiley and Paul Revere Village. They didn't know it, and neither did I at the time, but they were helping me get back to normal after a year in Vietnam.
